The Eight Vices - Unchastity

destroy those thoughts of the flesh early and the longer they are entertained, or the more you feed them, the harder it will be to defeat them

The Eight Vices series is all about me attempting to ask questions of myself, you the reader and society as a whole. I believe that, collectively, we have lost our way and that the world has become a place filled with all the sins, vices or demons that we were always warned about. Yes, they might be more modern incarnations of these vices, but they are there, unchanged, nonetheless.

On of the vices that seems to fit that description of the world today, is unchastity. Just let me list some of the other meanings and words used to describe this demon sin and tell me if you agree: carnality, corruptness, depravity, debauchery, eroticism, lust, pornography, vulgarity and wickedness. It is quite the list and the world is swimming in it. We have normalized gluttony, swinging, promiscuity, girls making vast amounts of money from prostituting themselves online (although we call it freedom to express themselves and being comfortable in their own bodies). The world is dripping in sin, and it is beginning to stink

To get back to the core vice itself then, it begins early in a mans life and it must be battled throughout his whole life on two fronts: the soul and the body. Everywhere we turn we see examples of the base evil thoughts of murder, adultery and unchastity, in all its forms. SO we must be vigilant each and every day to defeat it, each and every day. This demon can only be truly defeated by knowing that we have the power to defeat it within ourselves, but also, I believe, that we have been given some power from Jesus and the Lord our God to aid us also. We can defeat evil, but we have to want to, in our hearts. And that my friends is where the battle truly lies – in wanting to defeat it!

Whoever looks at a woman with lust, has already committed adultery with his heart | Matt 5:12

There was even a direct reference to the challenges of the flesh in what God said to Adam

Keep watch over the head of the serpent | Gen 3:15

So it is simple. If we do not admit the head, then we can also not admit the rest of the serpents body. This could be seen as a direct description of male physical arousal and the subsequent thoughts and acts that usually accompany it. We can then see how pornography plays a huge part in a young mans life. It literally kills your soul. A big question is who drives pornography in this world and to what end, it being so destructive. So destroy those thoughts of the flesh early and the longer they are entertained, or the more you feed them, the harder it will be to defeat them.
